Charlotte Howie Mooney

March 9, 1932 ~ October 16, 2016 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Charlotte Howie Mooney, age 84, died Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Brookdale of Port Orange.  Born in New Smyrna Beach, Charlotte was a lifetime area resident.

Charlotte attended Faulkner Street Elementary School, Live Oak Junior and Senior High Schools (now New Smyrna Beach High School), and went to Florida State University on full scholarship, graduating with a degree in education.  She worked shortly on Florida’s west coast, but soon returned to Volusia County for the bulk of her 36 year teaching career, retiring from Indian River Elementary School.  An accomplished writer and artist, she was a member of the Artists Work Shop and Memories and More writing group.  She sold her paintings and wrote the book Wisdom Hard Won.  During her teaching years, she also belonged to several educational organizations.

Survivors include her brother, Phillip Howie and his wife, Joyce, of New Smyrna Beach and beloved nieces Erin McDevitt and husband, Steven, of Port Orange, Regina George and husband, Gregg, of St. Augustine, Alexia Groszer of Amissville, Virginia, Jana (Bryce) Hammond of New Smyrna Beach, Ilona Teleki, of Washington, D.C., and Alexia’s and Ilona’s father, Paul Teleki, also of Amissville.

Her memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Settle-Wilder Chapel, with the Reverend Laura Berg, Coronado Community United Methodist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Operation Smile, 3641 Faculty Boulevard, Virginia Beach, VA 23453.
