Henry L. Agostinho, age 92, of New Smyrna Beach, died at home on Thursday, March 2, 2017.
Mr. Agostinho was born on August 9, 1924 to Francelina & Jose, in Portugal. Henry tended animals & ploughed the soil, which made him strong, and enjoyed fresh vegetables, baccala, garlic & olive oil. He joined the Army and then the Merchant Marines and eventually he jumped ship in NY Harbor. Lucky for him there was a parade for St Patrick so he joined in and marched till he could (scamper) leave. A hard worker, he cleaned halls and delivered milk for room and board. One evening, Henry went to a Portuguese Club for a dance and there he saw a really cute girl named Carmen; it was love at first sight.
Henry obtained legal status, then became a proud U.S. Citizen, in 1956. He and Carmen eventually came to New Smyrna Beach, shrimping the ocean and relocating to S. Carolina. They married in 1947 in NYC and had two children; a daughter, Esther, and son, Denis. They then came back to New Smyrna Beach to live and shrimp. Henry then became a porter, and eventually a painter, where he made his living painting anything he could. He was a member of the International Painters Union, Local 1486. Back home in Long Island, New York he had 3 grandkids and life was good.
After 35 years of marriage, his wife, Carmen, passed away.
On a trip to visit his family in Portugal, Henry met a widow and said, “you are going to be mine, Ilda”. Then the meeting of the minds exploded. Henry and Ilda married in 1981 and had 36 years of love, laughter and memories. Henry is survived by his beautiful wife, Ilda.
