Richard Kennington Nelson

Richard Kennington Nelson, 33rd degree Mason, of Edgewater, FL, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 in Columbia, SC at the age of 87.

Richard was born January 6, 1930, in Richmond, IN to Willard and Ethel (Mulnix) Nelson. He graduated from Jefferson High School, New Paris, OH, in 1948, and from Miami University, Oxford, OH, in 1953. On August 4, 1951, he married the former Nancy Swanton, in Richmond, IN. Richard and Nancy resided in Oxford, New Carlisle, and Enon, OH for 31 years and moved to E. Setauket, NY, where they lived for 14 years before retiring to Edgewater, FL, in 1996. Richard was employed as a CPA and chief financial officer and greatly enjoyed his profession. He served on the Mad River Green Local School Board of OH, for 12 years and served as both Treasurer and President of the Edgewater Landing Homeowners Association. Richard enjoyed gardening, square dancing, bridge clubs, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.

Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Nelson (Swanton); his son, Eric Nelson (Patricia) of Ocala, FL; daughters, Ellen Nelson (Dave Guinn) of Edgewater, FL and Edith Pietrykowski (David) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Kendra McElrean (Gerard), Kristin Black, Ryan Nelson, Michael Black, Sydney Campbell (Bradley), and Whitney Pietrykowski; great-grandchildren, CJ Wloszcyna, Riley Nelson, and Liam McElrean; his sisters, Charlotte Starr, Dorothy Brown, and Kristine Varnell-Vaughn, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Ethel, and his brother, Philip Nelson.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00, Tuesday, September 19, at Edgewater Union Church, Edgewater, FL, the Reverend Ned Michael will be officiating. Interment will follow at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, in Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Edgewater Union Church or Halifax Health Hospice, Edgewater.

Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather....and friend.
