Ronald "Doc" Abner

Ronald “Doc” Abner, age 67, of Port Orange, died Sunday, November 12 at Halifax Health Medical Center. Born in Alton, Illinois to the late Wallace Ronald and Anna Bernice Bowen Abner, Doc was a United States Army veteran as a combat medic. He worked in construction and was very proud of having helped build Epcot.

Doc attended Relevant Church, Daytona Beach, and was a member of VFW Post #4250 and Eagles #4089. He lived and breathed music, and said it was his therapy. He sang and played the guitar in Madison County Band and Highway 40 Band. A beach lover, Doc enjoyed kayaking, fishing, and taking long walks.

Survivors include his wife Gail; four daughters, Dawn (Kyle) Himel, Cindy Walden, Darlene (Ralph) Caoleo, Tara (Chris) Corbin; four sons, Shawn Abner, Anthony (Carol) Prisco, David Caroleo, Matthew Caroleo; nine grandchildren, Cole and Kent Himel, John, Christopher, Kayla, Ashley, Shadow, Luna, Jody Bo; three great grandchildren, Shea, Brynlee, Bo Alexander; one sister, Carolyn Suhre, IL; two brothers, Ross (Debbie) Abner, KY, James (Debbie) Abner, IL. Preceded in death by parents, Wallace and Bernice; brother, John Bowen; wife, Marygene Abner.

Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 18th at Settle-Wilder Chapel in New Smyrna with Pastor Christopher Sarno officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service at Settle-Wilder Chapel. Memorial service will be held at VFW #4250 in New Smyrna at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to charities helping veterans with PTSD or homelessness, such as Veterans Counseling Veterans, 4100 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, FL.
