William Mark Scarbrough, age 65, a New Smyrna Beach native and long-time area resident, passed away at his home in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on September 3, 2017.

As a youth, Mark was a lifeguard, but his 28 year career was in aerospace, working with NASA, Rockwell, Lockheed Martin, Martin Marietta, Skunk Works, United Space Alliance, and Boeing.  In 1989, he received the Silver Snoopy Award, the Astronauts Personal Achievement Award for his professionalism and dedication which greatly enhanced flight safety and mission success.  He also received the First Shuttle Achievement Award in appreciation for his contribution to success of the first manned orbital flight of the Space Shuttle.  He received the flag that flew on Space Shuttle Columbia on November 12, 1981 for his significant contribution to the success of that mission.  In addition to aerospace work, he was involved with experimental aircraft and defense projects.

An outdoors man, Mark loved the ocean, surfing, the mountains and skiing. A generous and spiritual man and past member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church, he was always helping others.  He was a lifetime scholar who had to learn something new every day, especially in the disciplines of  multiple religions and music.
