David C. Hayes, age 52, of DeLand, died suddenly Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Florida Hospital DeLand. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, David was a nearly lifetime resident of Volusia County, having lived in the greater Miami area until age 8. A graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School, he was a long time journeyman lineman for the Utilities Commission of New Smyrna Beach and was recently foreman of a crew that traveled to the Florida panhandle to assist with the Hurricane Michael recovery. David was an outdoors man who enjoyed fishing, boating, jet skiing, air soft, and mountain biking. Most of all, however, was his dedication to his dogs. He also had a softer side, evidenced by the generous help he provided at his mother’s bed and breakfast.
Survivors include his mother, Linda Hayes of Daytona Beach; uncle and aunt, Richard and Sandy Gill of Orlando; cousins, Sheldon (Sabrina) Gill of DeLand, Tad (Joanne) Williams of Lighthouse Point, Carol (Cort) Steck of St. Petersburg; step-father, Walter Johnson of New Smyrna Beach; lifelong friend Chase Morris and good friend Patti Harowicz. He was preceded in death by his father, David P. Hayes, and sister, Claire Marie Hayes-Johnson.
Celebration of David’s life will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 13 at Coronado Community United Methodist Church, 201 South Peninsula Avenue, New Smyrna Beach, with the Reverend Laura Berg officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Southeast Volusia Humane Society, 1200 S. Glencoe Road, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168.
