Joyce Harris Helms

Joyce Harris Helms, age 90, of New Smyrna Beach, passed away Sunday, June 24 at Halifax Hospice Edgewater.  Born in Plymouth, North Carolina, Joyce came to this area in 1998 from Columbia, South Carolina.

A retired office manager for the Student Fund Accounting Office at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, she was a member of the Beachside Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Lee Owens of Miami; two daughters, Nancy O’Connor of New Smyrna Beach and Debbie Hardman of St. Pete Beach; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Tharrington of Fayetteville, North Carolina.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Helms in 2003.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. Friday until service time. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 29 at Settle-Wilder Chapel with the Reverend Mark Spivey officiating. Entombment will follow in the Veterans Wall of Honor at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Halifax Health Hospice, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129 for the Edgewater Care Center.
