Karlyne E. Cooper, age 86, of New Smyrna Beach, died Monday, September 17 at home. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, she came to this area as a child, attended local schools, and was Miss Seaside Fiesta, Miss Indian River, and was first runner-up for Miss Florida.
A military wife, Karlyne was married to Col. Frederick E. Cooper III for 66 years. Accompanying him through his career, she rubbed shoulders with heads of state and other government officials all over the world, while keeping New Smyrna Beach as their permanent residence. She was a licensed Realtor in both California and Pennsylvania, was Ambassador of the Year with Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce, elected Republican State Committee Woman for Volusia County, and was a member of Space Coast Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, Frederick, survivors include a son, Frederick E. Cooper IV of Stafford, Virginia; daughter, Denise Johns of New Smyrna Beach; grandchildren, Benjamin Johns of New Smyrna Beach, currently serving in the U. S. Army, Frederick E. Cooper V of Stafford, Virginia, Holly Cooper, also of Stafford; and step-grandchildren, Richard Johns III of Edgewater, and Jason Q. Johns of New Smyrna Beach.
Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 21 at Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, with Pastor Daniel Cox, Space Coast Baptist Church, officiating.
