Lowell "Friday" Penning

Lowell “Friday” Penning, age 69, of New Smyrna Beach, died Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Halifax Health Hospice Care Center.  Born in Le Mars, Iowa to Harriet and William Wayne Penning, Lowell spent his early years in Southern California, and moved to this area in 1991 from Greer, South Carolina.

A mechanical engineer and former salesman at Bruce Rossmeyer New Smyrna Harley Davidson,  Lowell loved riding his motorcycle and playing tennis at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona where he was a member.  He was an avid surfer, surfing the waters off California, Costa Rica, Hawaii,  and the Inlet in New Smyrna Beach.  Known for his quick wit, no-nonsense attitude to life and keen intellect,  he was well known in the community.  He enjoyed classic rock and his favorites were The Rolling Stones, The Doors and Bob Dylan.  Dylan's words and music, especially,  were very influential in his life.

Survivors include his wife Kay; his sons, Lowell Jr. and his wife Alyson of Georgia, Marc of Florida, Scott and his wife Migyoung of Georgia, and John Penning of California; step-sons Andrew Smith of California and Joel Smith of Florida; and grandchildren, Ryan, Zackery, Savannah, London and Jezelle of South Carolina/Georgia and Michael, Ashlee and Kristen of California.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at Settle-Wilder’s chapel in New Smyrna, with the Reverend Al Paquette, officiating.  Friends will be received on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home.
