Michael T. “Mike” Peterson, 62, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 at his home in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Mike was born in Madelia, MN and was raised in St. James, MN. He was a standout wrestler in high school, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University. Mike was an avid sports fan, who loved the Minnesota Vikings.
He moved to Florida in 1988 to begin a teaching career at New Smyrna Beach Middle School. Mike worked at NSB Middle for 27 years, beginning as a shop teacher then transitioning into technology education. He was also an adjunct teacher in the evening GED program at Daytona Beach Community College for over 20 years.
While teaching, Mike earned his master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University with a degree in Educational Leadership. He became an assistant principal in 2016 at New Smyrna Beach High School. Becoming a Cuda was the highlight of his career. Mike enjoyed fishing, especially in Minnesota, and going to concerts with friends.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Holly Shaffer Peterson, his son, Ben, step-daughter, Ashley Wagnon, mother, Idele, sister, Linda Hivner, brothers, Bob (Laurie) and Brad (Debbie), and a host of cousins and friends throughout Minnesota and Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, Delmar.
Mike will be fondly remembered and missed by the entire New Smyrna Beach community.
A Celebration of Life will be on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the New Smyrna Beach High School auditorium. Family requests attendees to wear Minnesota Vikings or Cuda colors if possible.
