Sharon S. Ohlson, age 70, of Edgewater, died Tuesday at AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach. Born in Fostoria, Ohio, Mrs. Ohlson came to this area in 1972 from Monroeville, Pennsylvania. She retired in 2007, after a 37 year career in education as a teacher and assistant principal at New Smyrna Beach High School. She was known for her outstanding work ethic and her determination to help others achieve.
Mrs. Ohlson received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s degree from University of Central Florida. She was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church of New Smyrna Beach where she taught Sunday School, chaired the finance committee, and was active with the Emmaus Group and the Hot Meals program. Also, she was a long-standing member of Smyrna Yacht Club and loved being near the water.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend who showed infinite love and grace to all who knew her.
Survivors include two daughters, Dawn (Adam) Starling of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Michelle (Christopher) Zahner of League City, Texas; two sisters, Susan (Greg) Ryals of Mandeville, Louisiana, and Jane (Stephen) Small of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida; and grandchildren, Brady Starling of Raleigh, and Katelyn, Grace, and Charlotte Zahner, all of League City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and parents, Charles and Betty Jane Houghton Souder.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Lawrence Wilson and the Reverend Robert Hahn officiating. Private interment will follow in Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Settle-Wilder Chapel.
