Susan Teresa Galbreath Bergert began her next journey on Jan. 30, 2018. A seventh generation resident of the area, she was the quintessential New Smyrna Beach River Rat. She was active in politics, volunteerism, and loved sharing the history of SE Volusia County.
Susan, or Suzie as she was known to her childhood friends, graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1963 and the University of Florida in 1967 with a degree in English and journalism. She taught for many years throughout Florida, worked for non-profit organization and the U.S. Dept. of Education, and eventually retired from the public school system in Virginia.
In retirement she moved from Northern Virginia back home to Florida and became a fixture in New Smyrna once again - volunteering at the NSB History Museum, giving river boat tours, and becoming active in local politics and issues. She loved being in her hometown and remained very close to her childhood and high school friends. An adventurous soul, she enjoyed travelling and the outdoors.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Byron Joel Bergert. She is survived by her son David Bergert (Stacy) of Clifton, Virginia, daughter Beverly Bergert Beuster (Joseph) of Fairfax, Virginia and her four grandsons Jacob Bergert, Corbin Bergert, Thomas Beuster, and Jack Beuster. Her family will sorely miss their ‘Susu’.
An open house is scheduled on Sunday February 4th from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at her home on 2689 Old Smyrna Trail.
