Thomas Cox Obituary

Thomas Edwin Cox, age 62, died Friday, April 20 at Halifax Health Medical Center.  Born in Brooklyn, New York, Thom came to this area in 1987 from Leesburg.

After graduation from Eustis High School in 1973, Thom joined the United States Air Force, serving for six years.  He was a branch manager for Sun Bank and then Citizens Federal Savings and Loan in Leesburg before coming to this area in 1987 to be branch manager for Citizens Federal in Port Orange.  In the mid 1980s, he was appointed by Governor Bob Graham to the Board of Trustees for Lake-Sumter Community College, a position he held until moving to Volusia County.  He was also involved in Special Olympics in both Lake and Volusia Counties; Economic Development with Port Orange Chamber of Commerce; Port Orange Kiwanis; and Adult Literacy, where he taught adults to read or improve their reading.  Tragically, Thom suffered a traumatic brain injury, which left him confined to Sandlewood Nursing Center in Daytona Beach for the last 25 years of his life.

Thom is survived by Ruthanne Cox and their daughter, Victoria R. Kinzey and their son-in-law, Jason R. Kinzey.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of New Smyrna Beach, with the Reverend Rodney Roehner officiating.
