Walter Syrotiak, age 83, of New Smyrna Beach, died Saturday, December 8 at Port Orange Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. After retiring as a service engineer in the scientific instruments industry, Mr. Syrotiak came to this area in 1996 from his native Stamford, Connecticut.
A Navy veteran of the Korean Era, Walter served aboard the USS Northampton, and attended numerous annual crew reunions. A member of Smyrna Yacht Club, he enjoyed sailing with the Old Men of the Sea, power boating, and building boats. He and his wife also were avid travelers, visiting almost every national park in the country.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Linda; son, James Walter Syrotiak and wife, Antoinette, of Richfield, Connecticut; daughter, Diana Lynne Syrotiak of Norwalk, Connecticut; grandson, Michael James Syrotiak of Newtown, Connecticut; granddaughters, Nicole Elisabeth Syrotiak of Canton, New York; and cousin, Barbara Potter of New Smyrna Beach.
Memorial service with military honors will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 14 at Settle-Wilder Chapel, with The Reverend Mark Spivey officiating.
