Gail Cunningham Swoope, age 73, of New Smyrna Beach, died peacefully at her home on Monday November 8, 2021. Born in Daytona Beach to James J. And Erna Meyer Cunningham, Gail was a local high school graduate, a University of South Florida graduate, and had taught public elementary school in Florida, Arizona and Texas for many years.
She was a professional artist and enjoyed travel as well as cruising on her live-aboard sailboat for three years. She enjoyed travel in her travel trailer over much of the United States as well as primitive camping and backpacking. Gail was a member of the Boat and Ski Club, New Smyrna Beach; Girls Club, Artist Workshop, Marine Discovery Center, NSB Museum of History and Friends of Canaveral Seashore. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and friend to many people in town.
Survivors include her high school sweetheart and husband of 40 years, Jim; son, Dylan (Ashley) Swoope, of Austin, Texas; daughter, Julie Swoope, of Brooklyn, New York; 2 granddaughters, Ava Swoope, and Lydia Swoope, both of Austin, Texas; and sister, Deborah Clark, of New Smyrna Beach. Gail was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Patricia Conley.
There will be a memorial service the last week of December 2021 at a venue in New Smyrna Beach yet to be determined.
