Gerard P. McLoughlin passed away peacefully in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, on September 26, 2025, at the age of 86 after a short illness.
Dr. McLoughlin was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 8, 1939, to John and Mary (Kelly) McLoughlin of Drumkeeran, County Leitrim, Ireland. He was the youngest of nine siblings.
Dr. McLoughlin is survived by his sister, Margaret McLoughlin of Lynbrook, NY, and his brother, Joseph McLoughlin of Southampton, NY. He is also survived by 30 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary McLoughlin; his sister, Mary McHugh; and his brothers John, Michael, James, Francis, and Thomas.
Dr. McLoughlin attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School and Cardinal Farley Military Academy before graduating from Belmont Abbey College. He went on to attend University College Galway Medical School in Galway, Ireland. After completing a residency and fellowship in pediatric medicine in Toronto, Canada, he returned to Long Island.
In 1973, he opened a private pediatric practice in Southampton and served as an attending physician associated with Southampton Hospital for more than 35 years. Over the course of his career, he cared for countless children, many of whom still have fond memories of Dr. McLoughlin. His love for medicine carried on after his retirement, constantly following up on the latest developments.
Dr. McLoughlin’s greatest joy was being on the water whether it was fishing trips on his boat, the Long Gull, out to the canyons, or simply trolling around Peconic Bay. He was an active member of the Bullhead Yacht Club and the Smyrna Yacht Club.
He also had a deep love for his Golden Retrievers - Tully, Kruger, Shinny, and Southy and could often be found on the beach, happily throwing a ball for them at the ocean’s edge or at the nature reserve.
Dr. McLoughlin was a devout Catholic and had been a dedicated member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in New Smyrna Beach and the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 8, at 9:30 a.m. at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Interment will follow at Southampton Cemetery.
