Jacqueline “Jackie” Mayberry of Edgewater, beloved mother, Nana, and friend, passed away Saturday, December 28th, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Born May 1, 1930, in Fort Benning, GA to Elton and Ora Branch Stewart, Jackie grew up an Army brat having the opportunity to ride Gen. George S. Patton’s horses and witness our WWII POWs enjoying R&R at the Ft. Benning community pool during wartime. In 1951 she married Captain Robert F. Patterson. Some of the happiest years of her life were in the role of a military wife. They were divorced in 1973 and Jackie moved to Lakeland in 1974. She married W.R. Mayberry in 1975 and they settled in Edgewater 35 years ago.
A homemaker for most of her life, her faith defined her true character. Jackie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Smyrna Beach and was involved in their Bible study and small group “Ladybugs”. She selflessly contributed to her community by volunteering at the NSB Little Theater, Grace House Pregnancy Center, and Halifax Health Hospice. Jackie enjoyed reading, a challenging game of bridge, and a good steak dinner. She delighted in the company of her family and friends, often filling them with encouragement and sharing her faith in Christ. Jackie learned to water ski in Pearl Harbor, was an extra in a Japanese film, and could dance the jitterbug to the envy of DWTS! Jackie had a lifelong love of swimming, calling Esther Williams her childhood hero. She spent many hours exercising and swimming in the pool at Hacienda Del Rio alongside her fellow “pool doctors.” Jackie also relished her time of employment with Settle-Wilder Funeral Home helping families through difficult times with her genuine compassion and positive personality. She made many dear and lasting friendships during her 12 years with Settle-Wilder that continued to the end.
Left to remember and honor her example are 3 daughters; Pamela Patterson, Patricia (Jack) Matthews, and Judith (Joe) O’Malley; 8 grandchildren, Meghan Matthews, Jacob Matthews, Ben Matthews, Bradley Mixer, Natalie LeCroy, Blake Mixer, Patrick O’Malley, Erin Orlandini, and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Mayberry, her parents, and a brother, Rudy.
Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 1, at First Presbyterian Church, 509 Magnolia St, New Smyrna Beach, with Rev. Beverly Richardson and Rev. Tim McCardel, officiating.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Mayberry’s name to: St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or a charity of choice.
