James Collins Obituary

James Randall Collins, age 93, of New Smyrna Beach, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2023, at Halifax Hospice in Edgewater.

Jim was born October 4, 1929, in Olean, NY, to Raymond and Irene Collins.

He earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Buffalo. Jim married the love of his life, Suzanne Mosier, on August 21, 1954, in Buffalo, NY. He and Suzanne moved to Camp Lejeune, NC, in 1956 where he served the U.S. Navy as a Naval Lieutenant medical doctor. In 1958, the couple returned to Olean to begin Jim’s medical practice, then moved to Cleveland in 1962 where Jim completed his residency in anesthesia at Case Western. From 1964-68, Jim practiced medicine and taught at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Jim and Suzanne moved back home to the Buffalo area in 1968, settling in Williamsville, NY where they raised their two sons. Jim practiced anesthesiology at Millard Fillmore Hospital for 26 years, retiring in 1994. They built their home in Sugar Mill in 1992 and began residing permanently in New Smyrna Beach in 2004. They attended St. Peter the Fisherman Church in New Smyrna Beach. Jim especially enjoyed golf and recorded 7 holes-in-one during his membership at Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach and Transit Valley Country Club in Buffalo. A voracious reader, Jim was a life-long learner, always curious about new technologies and how things worked. He loved to build and fly model airplanes, built golf clubs and was one of the first to buy an IBM computer. He rarely missed watching and cheering for his beloved Buffalo Bills. Jim was hardworking, kind-hearted, and generous. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, of New Smyrna Beach; sons, Mark of New Smyrna Beach and Jim (Chris) of Hinsdale, IL; two grandchildren, Nicholas of West Chicago, IL and Barbara of Brooklyn, NY; sister, Viola Sader (nee Collins) of Olean, NY; and a number of nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Paul, Richard, and Gerald.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
