Janet Wassil Brooker

Janet Wassil Brooker of New Smyrna Beach, Florida passed away peacefully in Hospice of stomach cancer on September 17, 2021 with close family members present.

 

Janet was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 7th, 1940. She and her mother Zhena moved to Erie, Pennsylvania with her sister, Valerie in the mid-50's to be with her Russian families.

 

While in high school, Janet was a member of the choir of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ in Erie where she both sang and read in the Church Slavanic language. She graduated from Erie High School in 1958 where she was the lead majorette in her junior and senior years.

 

Three blocks from home was Hamot hospital school of Nursing where she became a registered nurse in 1961. She moved to Cleveland to begin her nursing career where she was an PRN for over 40 years.

 

In 1961 she met her future husband Jim and were married in 1963 at the Sunset Inn in Erie presided by the mayor of Erie who was one of her high school teachers.

 

Janet had multiple hobbies including gardening and golf. She belonged to Acacia Country Club in Lyndhurst Ohio for 18 years and Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach Florida and lastly at Hidden Lakes golf club with her regular lady friends. She was also a member of the New Smyrna Beach Garden Club for 18 years.

 

Janet is survived by her husband Jim; daughter Jill, son-in-law Jon, and grandchildren Ryan and Brooke of Cumming, GA;  son Jay Brooker of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; sister Valerie and her husband Kenneth Engels of Chattanooga, TN. She was loved by everyone she touched and will be missed dearly.

 

A “Celebration” of Janet’s Life will be held “outside” on October 11, 2021 at the River Park Terrace restaurant at 302 South Riverside Dr  from Noon to 2:00 p.m.  Dress attire is casual, Bermuda shorts, flip flops, etc.
