Janis Campanella Obituary

Janis (Johnson) Campanella, of New Smyrna Beach, FL, died peacefully on May 30th, 2023. She was born the oldest daughter to Donald and Marcia Johnson on October 9, 1958, in Mercer Island, Washington.

After graduating from University of Washington with a degree in English, she started her career in the finance world. That career eventually took her across the country to New York City where she met her husband of 37 years, Richard Campanella.

At 26 years old, Jan welcomed into her life Rich’s two young daughters, Jennifer and Jillian when they married on June 14, 1986. They created a home in Gillette, NJ and were members of that close knit community for 15 years. Jan and Rich commuted daily together into NYC to work at Lehman Brothers, until 1993 when Jan returned to school to pursue a law degree. She graduated from Rutgers Law in 1996 and began her second career as an attorney for Waterhouse Securities. She worked for the firm for over 25 years, throughout several acquisitions and mergers. Jan and Rich relocated to Boca Raton in 2001, eventually settling on the coast in New Smyrna Beach in 2017.

To know Jan was to know her in motion. She was an accomplished runner, competing in several races each year. She completed the NYC marathon in 1998 and 1999, posting sub-4 hour times both years. She enjoyed a multitude of outdoor activities, including golf, tennis, and paddle boarding. Watching the sunset from her deck with a glass of Chardonnay was her favorite way to end a day.

She is predeceased by her parents and sister, Lisa Susen. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard, daughters, Jennifer and Jillian and their husbands, Joe and Doug, her five darling grandchildren, Maddie, Joey, Andrew, Annabelle and Amelia, her brother, Marshall, nephews Sam and Ryan, nieces, Lauren, Tracey, and Stephanie and 6 great-nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held in New Smyrna Beach.
