Obituary

Joseph E. Godard, M.D., age 80, of New Smyrna Beach, died at his residence in the early hours of Friday, September 2, 2022, surrounded by family.

Dr. Godard was born in Clinton, Massachusetts to William and Isabel Crossman Godard.  He graduated from Hebron Academy, Hebron, Maine and received his undergraduate degree from Brown University.  He earned his medical degree at the University of Vermont and completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He then began his radiology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

His residency was interrupted by two years of service in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.  Dr. Godard was attached to the U.S. Marine Corps and stationed in Okinawa, where he treated soldiers injured in the war.  After completing his military service at the Orlando Naval Hospital and completing his residency, Dr. Godard moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1974.

He was the first full-time Radiologist at Fish Memorial Hospital (now AdventHealth) in New Smyrna Beach, where he worked for twenty-two years.  He then semi-retired and did locum tenens assignments throughout Florida and several other states, having medical licenses in six states.

In his spare time, Joe enjoyed spending time with family, swimming, riding his bicycle, watching movies and following the stock market. His humor and infectious laugh will be remembered by everyone who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Nancy; 2 sons, Andrew Godard (Juliet) of Port Orange, and Michael Godard (Chelsea) of Austin, TX; two granddaughters, Karissa and Natalie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Gordon and Bill.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 pm, Tuesday September 13, at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home; with Halifax Health Hospice Chaplain Kennedy Jacobs officiating.

Donations may be made in Dr. Joseph E. Godard’s name to: Halifax Health Hospice, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
