Laurence Edmund Gowen II, fondly known to many as Larry, left us on March 21, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on February 4, 1947, in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida, Larry spent his final years in nearby New Smyrna Beach, surrounded by family.
Larry's life was filled with achievements, adventures, and a whole lot of laughter. From 1969 to 1975, he served as a Sergeant in the Air Force, where he honed his skills as an aircraft mechanic. Those who served alongside him would tell you he was the guy who could always lighten the mood with a well-timed joke or a clever prank. After his military service, Larry married the love of his life, Gail, on August 24, 1975. Their nearly 50 years of marriage were a testament to their enduring love and partnership.
Family was Larry's proudest accomplishment. He is survived by his wife, Gail, his children—daughter Heather Govoni (Todd), son Laurence Gowen III, and daughter Tracy Brooks (Ricky). His legacy lives on in his grandchildren: Jessica & John Johnson, Mariah & Tim Wilcoxson, Tyler Brooks, Morgan Kelly (Jake), Nicholas Govoni, Alex Govoni, and Julia Govoni. Larry's sisters, Mary Foster, Grace Davis (Jim), and Kathy Sommer, along with so many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him, carrying forward the family bonds he so valued. Larry's eyes would light up when he spoke of his family, and he considered them his greatest achievement.
In his professional life, Larry had a knack for getting things done, whether it was running the Hinds & Gowen Farms for 15 years or returning to his roots in mechanics and construction. Larry's true gift was his ability to connect with people. It wasn't just his professional endeavors that defined him, it was his personality. Larry had a sense of humor that could fill a room. He was the life of every party, always ready with a prank or a joke, and his infectious smile could brighten the darkest of days. Larry's generosity was boundless; he was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Charlotte Gowen, his sister Elizabeth Turberville, and his brother Michael Gowen. Their memories remain cherished by those he leaves behind.
We invite all who knew and loved Larry to join us in celebrating his life. A viewing will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Settle-Wilder in New Smyrna Beach. Following the viewing, a reception will be hosted at the Lions Club in New Smyrna Beach from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All family and friends are welcome to share stories, laughs, and memories in honor of a man who brought so much joy to our lives.
Larry will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and unwavering love for his family. Though he has departed from this world, his spirit continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those he touched.
