Leo Kernica Obituary

Leo Kernica, age 89, of New Smyrna Beach, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024 at his home with his daughter by his side. 
Born in Chicago, Illinois to Stephan and Helen Zebloski Kernica, Leo came to New Smyrna Beach in 1979 from Crestwood, IL.

Leo was a 1953 graduate of Reavis High School, Burbank, Illinois and was recruited out of college to play Minor League baseball with the Kansas City A's. 

A United States Army veteran, he was drafted in the Army in 1957. 

He met and married his wife of 58 years Dorothy in Chicago and together they started a family.  Leo worked for the railroad, became a printer by trade, working at NuArt in Chicago. After moving the family to Florida,  Leo worked briefly for the City of New Smyrna Beach Public Works and then was well known and respected for his work at the City of New Smyrna Beach Municipal Golf course as a senior starter,for many years, until retirement. He was a long- time member of the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Men's Golf Assoc and Golf Advisory Board.  His love for golf was zealous and showed when he taught kids the game at the annual City Golf Camps.

Leo was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and past member of the Lions Club.  Leo had a wonderful kind smile and equally kind personality.

Survivors include his daughter, Sharon (Bob) Wiley of New Smyrna Beach; son, Jay (fiance, Tammy) Kernica of Brantley, Alabama; grandchildren, Jed Wiley, Ross (Melissa) Wiley, Jeff (Shelley) Wiley, and Josh Kernica; great grandson, Fisher Wiley; and brother, Ray Kernica.  Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Dee) Kernica and his parents.
