Mary Pearl Alderman Lowe passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 97 at Brilliance Assisted Living Facility in Edgewater, Florida. Born in Oak Hill, Florida, to Oscar D. and Mamie Hall Alderman, Mary played basketball in her youth and graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1945. At age 19, she began her career as a flight attendant for National Airlines in Jacksonville, Florida. There she met her husband of 62 years, Lester Gilbert Lowe, who worked as a pilot. Together, they moved to Miami, Florida, to start a family, where Mary became a devoted stay-at-home mother to their three children and granddaughter. In 1989, the couple retired to New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Mary was a woman of warmth and kindness, with a natural ability to bring beauty and joy to those around her. She was skilled in sewing and knitting, often creating handmade pieces for her loved ones. Known for her cooking and baking, her famous calamondin and rum cakes became a family favorite. Mary also had a passion for gardening, and a love for animals, especially dogs and peach-colored rolling canaries. As a faithful Christian, she attended church every Sunday at New Smyrna Beach First Baptist, where she often volunteered. Additionally, she enjoyed attending her grandson’s theater shows, watching ice skating, and taking long walks along the beach. A firm believer in holistic well-being, she was dedicated to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Mary was also a world traveler that loved experiencing new cultures, and you could often find her with her nose buried in a book, always eager to expand her knowledge. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her two children, Linda Hariouk and Gary Lowe; five grandchildren, Corey Miller, Lauren Lowe Beck, Kalen Hariouk, Kristina Lowe, and Sean Lowe; three great-grandchildren, Chelsey Beck, Michael Beck, and Scarlett Miller; two brothers, Vincent Alderman and Dan Alderman; and her sister, Shirley Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Lowe; son, Barry Lowe; and siblings, Naomi Slaughter, Dewalt Alderman, Mila Crawford, and Meta Devlin.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Oak Hill, 192 East Halifax Avenue with Reverend Joel Kobosh officiating.
Donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Humane Society, 1200 S. Glencoe Road, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168.
