Mary Denise Smith, age 58, of New Smyrna Beach, died Thursday, September 8, 2022 in New Smyrna Beach. Born in Columbia, South Carolina to Patricia Ann Leaphart and Albert Porter Whitworth III, Mary graduated from Lyman High School, Longwood, Florida, in 1982. She later attended the University of Florida, graduating with a degree from the College of Journalism in 1986.
Mary married her husband Dirk Smith in 1989 and served as a steadfast military spouse for 32 years. She loved horses, dining out with family and friends, and spending time at the beach. She had an infectious smile, sharp wit, and a knack for making friends and bringing smiles to the faces of all she touched. Mary ultimately succumbed to complications related to a courageous 23-year battle with brain cancer. Her perseverance and positive attitude were an inspiration to all who met her. She loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend that will be truly missed by all she knew and loved.
Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Dirk; son, Garret Smith, of Goldsboro, North Carolina; daughter, Kaycee (Andrew) Vallozzi, of Naples; father and mother, Al and Pat Whitworth, of Punta Gorda; and sisters, Laura Whitworth and Amy (Rob) Dwyer.
