Richard Abbott Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Joseph Abbott, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Richard, a resident of New Smyrna Beach, was a distinguished veteran and public servant. He peacefully departed this life surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and compassion.

Richard was predeceased by his cherished wife, Marjory. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including his son, Richard Abbott Jr. (Marilyn); daughters Jacqueline Mullan (Robert); Victoria Pitcavage (Stan deceased); Jeannine Jennette; Marjory Horne (Houston) and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.

A proud Navy veteran of World War II, Richard served his country with honor and valor. After his military service, he dedicated his life to public safety as a Captain in the New York City Fire Department, where he served for 23 years. Richard's commitment to firefighting and education led him to become the founding director of the Fire Science Institute at John Jay College, where he shaped the futures of countless fire professionals. Additionally, he was a respected member of the New York State Governor's Arson Board, contributing his expertise to enhance fire safety across the state.

Richard was also a founding member of the Cypress Head Golf Club and an active member of the Smyrna Yacht Club, where he sailed with the Old Men of the Sea, sharing his love of the outdoors. Richard Joseph Abbott was a man of integrity, warmth, and strength. He leaves behind a rich legacy of love, service, and dedication to family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
