Richard (Dick) Cordes Obituary

Richard (Dick) Allen Cordes, age 81, of Edgewater, died Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Halifax Health Hospice Edgewater, with his family by his side.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Henry Herman and Vera Evelyn Ulrey Cordes, Dick moved to the Volusia County area in 2010.

A United States Navy veteran, his active military service included aircraft carrier USS Randolph, of the sixth fleet and serving in the Cuban Missile Crisis and picking up astronaut John Glenn. He also served on the USS Sandoval Troop transport involved in action at the Bay of Pigs . His favorite part of the Mediterranean was the port in Barcelona. Dick was very proud to have served for his country and share his stories to whomever would listen. Navy guy all the way. At ease now sailor.

His professional career varied. He worked at International Harvester in Ft. Wayne In. He was a volunteer fireman and EMT. He became one of the first full time paramedics in DeKalb County Indiana, serving in that role until his retirement. He also earned recognition as “Paramedic of the year” For saving a man from the top of a grain silo and repelling down with his patient. Dick was a realtor and real estate appraiser, doing appraisals in Angola, Indiana. He was the owner of Rustic Creations selling his woodworking creations at craft shows and his store front in Angola In.

He traveled the country in his RV with his wife, Cheryl from campground to campground . He was the Assistant Manager at Sugar Loaf Key KOA in the Florida Keys before moving to Volusia County, Florida.

In High School Dick and his friend Joe Weaver started the “Rhythm Rods” car club, in Garrett Indiana and is a Lifetime Member. He LOVES trucks, and rebuilding trucks; most recently his 1967 Chevy C10 “Casper”. Dick was a member of East Coast Cruisers Car Club, and the VFW in Port Orange. His family and friends would often hear Dick say, “If I was any better, you couldn’t stand me”.

He was baptized into Christ at the Baptist Church Garrett, In.  and was an active member at Crossroads Christian Church, in New Smyrna Beach. He made many friends who became family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Cheryl; five children, Michael (Barb) Hullinger; John Richard (Lisa) Cordes; Melissa Ann (Roger) Henry; Anna Marie (Scot) Dilts; and Amy Jo (Chris) Graham; sister Sandra Kay (William) Pufahl; ten grandchildren, Matthew, Kristin, Emmalee, Lauren, Katie, Abby, Jessica, Drew, Nate, and Danny; eleven great grandchildren, Triston, Korinne, Luke, Audrey, Kamdon, Wyatt, Haddon, Les, Rowan, Reese, and Evelyn Rose; several nieces including, Donna, Terri, and Sue. Also survived by his fur-baby, Chessie. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of Seventeen years, Janice Kay Shafer; son, Mitchell V. Hullinger; sister, Sharon Louise Barrett; nephew, Scott Blair, and his dog, Murphy. Dick will be forever in our hearts; and as he would say.....”Glad you got to see me today”.

Celebration of Life will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Tomoka Christian Church formerly Crossroads Christian Church, with the Reverend Ben Ling, 3338 SR 44, New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Interment of cremated remains with military honors will be in the National Cemetery at a later date in Indiana.
