Richard (Dick) Warren Hill, died October 5, 2024, New Smyrna Beach, Florida at age of 87. Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on February 18, 1937, to Granison Jasper and Elsie Warren Hill, Dick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen L. Hill; sons, Jeffrey G. Hill, Thad W. Hill married to Christa C. Hill, and Michael W. Hill married to Jody W. Hill; grandchildren: Jacob G. Hill, Madison K. Hill, James W. Hill, and Elissa A Hill; and 5 nephews and 1 niece. Dick was preceded in death by Granison Hill (father), Elsie Hill (mother), William (Bud) Hill (brother), Forest Ann (Suzy) Hill (sister). Dick was a 1955 graduate of Harbor High School, Ashtabula, Ohio; and Ohio State University, Agricultural Sciences (’59).
Dick served in the United Sates Army as a commissioned officer retiring after 31 years of service at rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He proudly commissioned all three of his sons in the military as officers, Jeff – US Army Colonel Retired (26 years), Thad – US Army Colonel Retired (26 years) and Mike, Captain, US Air Force (3 years).
Dick was a dedicated family man as he lived for his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Kathy, soon after graduating college where they quickly started their life as a married Army couple, as Dick attended the Armor Officer Basic Course at Fort Knox, KY. Children soon followed. The boys were Dick’s pride. Never missing out on a birthday, game or family milestone. He took great pride in commissioning the 3 of them to serve the country he loved in the armed services.
His other love was for tractors. Farm tractors. And they had to be red, International Harvester Red. The love of his red tractors goes back to his childhood as his grandfather owned and operated W.W. Hill, a farm store that served northeast Ohio. His father, Gransion, later joined the company and they changed the name to W.W Hill and Sons.
Dick loved nothing more than to go to work with Gransion as a young boy following his dad wherever he went. At age 13 he would accompany him to International Harvester events and soon thereafter began making deliveries to the local farmers – whom new young Dick by name.
Dick moved on from the family business and worked in sales for MFG, Co. They were famous for helping to develop many fiber glass industry firsts. Of note was the fiberglass body of early model Chevrolet Corvettes.
He moved the family to Florida in the early 1970’s where he worked in concrete building construction in estimating and project management before retiring. He rekindled his love for those red tractors after all his son’s graduated college and started collecting small scale model tractors. Poor Kathy didn't know so many little red tractors could exist!
His office at their house was a shrine to his family’s ties and his love of his memories where he displayed over 900 models of various International Harvester model tractors. Retiring a second and final time in New Smyrna Beach in 2000, in the house he and Kathy designed and built overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, one cannot miss it proudly displaying an American Flag and his red International Harvester mailbox.
Rest in Peace Pop.
