Robert Weiss Obituary

COL Robert Marshall Weiss (ret), U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, Director of Communications for Volusia County, ordained Southern Baptist pastor and long term resident of New Smyrna Beach went to see Jesus Sept 11, 2024. He was born February 13, 1940 in Somerville, MA to Ronald and Marion Weiss.

Bob received a Bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Northeastern University and 2 Master’s degrees from American University in Business Administration and Information Systems. Bob worked at Mitre Corp on one of the very first computers. While at Mitre, Bob met and married the love of his life Hope Scott Weiss Aug 4, 1962. Together they started a beautiful family that has grown to 3 children and their spouses they call their children “in love,” 9 grandchildren, 2 grandchildren “in love” and 6 great grandchildren with a 7th on the way. Bob’s early career lead him to help develop the Hawk missle as 1 of only 3 chemical engineers at Raytheon Technologies Corp.

Bob went on to serve 27 years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He served 2 tours in Vietnam and was one of the last to evacuate Saigon when the war ended. They traveled the world with the military. But it was Bob’s assignment to Stetson University that brought them to FL for the first time. Bob was the Professor of Military Science ROTC at Stetson (host school), UCF, Embry Riddle and Bethune Cookman. They fell in love with Volusia County and vowed to return to make it their forever home when they retired. A true patriot and highly decorated leader, he was honored to serve his country.

After retiring from the military, Bob became the Director of Communications for Volusia County. During his 12 years, he focused on modernizing and consolidating county communications and radio systems which has proved instrumental in saving countless lives particularly during natural disasters.

Bob was appointed by FL governor Jeb Bush to serve on the Board of Directors for Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach in 2007. During his 8.5 year tenure, the board chose and facilitated the hospital’s transition from a private community hospital to part of the Advent Healthcare system thus strengthening the hospital’s ability to serve a rapidly growing community.

Through everything, Bob’s faith was central in his life. He was ordained as a pastor at Triangle Baptist Church, Triangle VA in 1980 answering his call to serve his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He pastored many local churches including Rima Ridge Baptist in Ormond Beach, First Baptist Palm Coast, Beachside Baptist and First Baptist New Smyrna Beach.

Bob’s love of sports was infectious. From Nascar to the Boston Red Sox, Bob was a loyal fan. His passion for the Red Sox started as a child and lasted his whole life through. He proudly called himself their #1 fan.

Bob leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, service, and faith to all who knew him.
