“Great Aunt Charlotte” is how she signed her beautiful watercolor cards, that many of have been lucky enough to receive, and how we addressed cards to her. Charlotte was not only a loving aunt to me and my sister Ilona. She was a dear friend to her brother in-law, Paul, and a surrogate grandmother to her sister’s grandchildren.
Charlotte’s gentle kindness, accepting nature, loyalty and love kept the waters calm when life’s challenges seemed overwhelming to the rest of us. She steadied the family boat again and again and helped us grow through our struggles with tender and wise words. She comforted others in a way no one else could.
This was especially important following the early passing of her sister Laurilla Howie Teleki in 2005 who was only 64 years of age. It was then that Charlotte made a commitment to look after her sister’s grandchildren Stephanie and Kate as well as Zsuzsa who was born in 2009.
In 2006, Charlotte spent three months in Boston while her great niece Kate was treated for a rare brain cancer at MGH. Her support and love helped guide the family through a miraculous recovery that will never be forgotten.
In the following years, Charlotte visited her Virginia relatives, went on family vacations and guided us daily through phone calls. She entertained her brother-in-law, Paul, by conversing about the English language and a variety of academic topics. Those conversations helped him cope with the loss of his beautiful wife by allowing him see the bright side of life in the darkest moments.
Stephanie and Kate love to talk about how Charlotte could make the ordinary fun, like: squeezing four of us into her tiny closet during a tornado warning and laughing the whole time; watching Charlotte eat Pop Rocks for the first time and make faces; running her wheelchair through a rainstorm at Disney World and thinking that was the best ride they had; playing Scrabble until the words get ludicrous; watching her peek out the door during a blizzard in Virginia and many more. At age two Zsuzsa overheard Charlotte exclaim “Oh fooey!” in the kitchen and asked her mom, Ilona, what is “fooey”? Zsuzsa started associating “Great Aunt Charlotte” with a new exclamation that still makes Ilona laugh. These beautiful memories and many more will remain in our hearts forever until we see her again.

To the family of one of the most influential human beings of my childhood,
I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Ms. Mooney was the teacher who reached out to me at a very young age (kindergarten) and showed me compassion and understanding. I have never forgotten all of the important lessons that she taught. I will never forget The “Letter People” blow-up dolls that she used to teach us vowel sounds and when she took us on make- believe trips around the world with our homemade passports. I am a teacher today and I can honestly say that may have never happened without her influence in my young life. She believed in me when others did not. Ms. Mooney, may you rest in Our Heavenly Father’s arms and know that your presence was felt here on Earth and I thank God for putting you in my life. Heaven has just received one of the greatest teachers that has ever been.
